ABOUT

GENESEE JAY

Gen·e·see Jay

\ˌje-nə-ˈsē\ \ˈjā\

I am an artist and all-purpose designer living outside NYC offering art / creative direction and content creation.

If you're reading through my experience and notice that I seem scattered, that's because I'm widely known as the "ideas person" on every team I've been blessed to be a part of, and I luckily have the skills to pull my visions together or instruct a team that can. Design of all sorts relies on the basic aesthetic principles of art but also the prioritization information in a way that doesn't just tell a story, but opens an honest and open dialogue with the viewers or participants. This is the foundation for all of my projects and the rest falls into place with the help of a host of skills I've picked up over the years.

I officially started off in the marketing world in 2014 at a small social media marketing firm in Arizona where I created social media graphics, organized and conducted photoshoots for local businesses, and managed small business social media pages. I'm in love with the strategy and planning phases of this type of work and was often involved in the creation of campaign strategies.

A little over a year later I jumped into web design while still flexing my original skill set. I learned the ins and outs of information architecture and creating user-friendly interfaces, and instructed and oversaw a team of 30 developers who implemented the designs I created. Later, I learned how to build websites myself using the visual builder Webflow. I love the satisfaction of taking a whole mess of content and information and creating distinct pathways for users to follow to their destination. I'm a firm believer in the idea that this process should not only be easy for users, but engaging and full of delightful touches.

I've helped dozens of businesses rebrand by conducting branding strategy sessions, developing a new identity, and then creating all the components needed to complete their image, from stationery and business cards to marketing collateral and digital advertisements. I greatly enjoy the process of pulling together a story and finding different mediums that can be used to express a voice.

I now primarily do product photography and content creation to help businesses have a professional, expressive, and cohesive social media presence. I still love creating websites and always have a blast designing print materials. I'm also trying to focus more of my energy on creating fine art and even venturing into various forms of crafting and fabrication, using primarily concrete, because I can never get enough time working with my hands.
